any of several rays of the family Myliobatidae, found in tropical seas and noted for the soaring movements by which they propel themselves through the water: Myliobatis aquila common eagle ray, threatened from intensive fishing in the Mediterranean, is classified as data deficient because its relatively unthreatened populations in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean may be a different species.
